Will the Real German Shepherd Please Stand Up!!!

It is time to discuss what many inside the German Shepherd breeding community refuse to talk about, the fact that the average American breeder's lack of knowledge and greed has all but ruined the once great German Shepherd. At World Class Canine, we take our breeding program seriously and are proud to produce phenomenal military grade, working German Shepherds. Our German Shepherds can handle the most intense environmental and decoy pressures imaginable and can compete all day with the worlds best Malinois dogs. In the United States, breeders like us (concerned with the preservation of the breed) are unfortunately the vast minority. Before we get into our program, let me share with you some of my experiences across the United States in a career spanning nearly two decades. The German Shepherd is by far the most common breed brought in by clients for personal protection testing. You don't have enough free time to read about all of the garbage pail quality German Shepherds that have failed our personal protection test. It is rare for a client to bring in a German Shepherd (that wasn't breed here) that possesses the drives and solid nerves required for serious protection or, patrol work. By rare I mean, your chances of winning the lotto or, finding a decent working GSD in the newspaper are about even. I would go as far as to say that 80% of so-called working line Shepherds cannot handle what I consider to be the necessary level of real life working pressure associated with an actual fight with a human.
Let's talk for a moment about the public's misconception of the actual state of German Shepherd breeding:
1) Client's seemingly protective past or, current Shepherds: Many people mistakenly perceive nervous dogs showing aggression for real protective drive. Remember, dogs that are generally aggressive for no reason (with strangers, without cause, etc.) usually do so out of fear, which is not a favorable trait, genetically speaking. Because of the sad general state of German Shepherd breeding, many kennels produce nervous dogs, which should NOT be mistaken for protection dogs, as they will not be able to handle the pressure of an actual fight and will not possess the mental clarity to be trusted as a K-9 bodyguard.
2) Traditional police training and Schutzhund, Schutzhund, Schutzhund: The problem with status quo traditional police K-9 training and Schutzhund is the over manipulation of the K-9's prey drive in training and the lack of actual pressure applied. Shutzhund is a sport that focuses on a game like apprehension of a fleeing decoy. The dogs only focus is the bite sleeve and trust me, they absolutely know it is a game. Think about it, does a decoy running away equal the pressure a dog would face in a real life protection situation such as, a home invasion? Because Schutzhund only tests prey drive, not a solid nerve foundation (the most important attribute in the breeding of a solid dog), breeders that plan breeding's around Schutzhund titles are missing the bigger picture. Remember, that in true protection Schutzhund titles only give you a piece of the puzzle. Because of the sports popularity and the fact that most people are easily impressed by a dog playing a bite sleeve game, con men in our industry are currently selling dogs for up to $230 K, that I would bet my last dollar, won't bite in real life. As for typical police training, they commonly make the same mistake by over training apprehension scenario's without training true protection. Many of these so-called working dogs fail in an actual fight with someone not showing fear and fleeing. This is not an exaggeration, 95% of working police and Schutzhund German Shepherds can be easily shut down by the right decoy, with eye contact and body posture alone!
3) The extreme popularity and media portrayal of the German Shepherd: The German Shepherd is the most popular breed of dog in the world. Over the last several decades the German Shepherd's popularity has become it's downfall. In the 1970's the average German Shepherd was a well breed, driven and courageous dog, ideal for service and or, personal protection work. These authentic German Shepherds did however typically require a knowledgeable owner because of their inherent dominant temperament. Europeans have traditionally been far more knowledgeable in the handling of a dominant dog, because the average European possesses a canine for protection as well as companionship, whereas the United States is typically a pet culture. Hollywood and other media outlets began to portray the German Shepherd as a guard/attack dog in various movies. Soon thereafter, the German Shepherd's popularity skyrocketed and Americans began paying top dollar for anything with the title of "import."
As we discussed previously, Americans typically lack true canine training knowledge. This along with the European's attitude of "the dumb Americans won't know the difference between a good dog and a dud," lead to the importation of the worst German Shepherds Europe had to offer. Some kennels did sell quality dogs to customers in the United States, however the vast majority of European vendors believed that Americans couldn't handle a real dog, or simply took advantage of American ignorance. Even lines that started with a strong dog were quickly ruined by American breeders that lacked breeding knowledge and only concerned themselves with selling "import" puppies at a premium price.
As if things weren't already headed in the wrong direction, the breed started to become increasing popular in the show ring. Remember, so-called American show line German Shepherds are not true German Shepherds, they are in fact a separate breed disguised as a true German Shepherd. The true German Shepherd is a working dog, not a show dog! Any responsible working dog breeder, eugenically breeds dogs together to produce a certain result such as; high drive, solid nerves and a courageous temperament. In the show community, breeders specifically breed these desirable working traits out of dogs, so they will be more subdued at a show. Show lines breeders specifically breed for a certain look, not temperament or, performance.
I know this article has been rather grim, but the good news is; your search for world class German Shepherds is over, as World Class Canine produces the highest quality German Shepherds money can buy! Don't be one of those people who believe that just because you have papers saying your dog is a German Shepherd, it will protect you. That is simply not true.
